Italian Yarn Brands: Loro Piana, Zegna, Cariaggi & More

Italy's textile heritage is built on the shoulders of mill families who have spent generations perfecting the art of yarn production. The Biella district alone — a small area in Piedmont — houses more premier yarn mills per square kilometer than anywhere else on Earth.

At Italiana Filati Pregiati, we've worked directly with these mills for over 70 years. We source their stock yarn — surplus production, discontinued colors, end-of-season lots — and pass the savings on to our customers. Here's what makes each of our partner mills special.

Loro Piana

Founded: 1924 (six generations of textile heritage dating to the early 1800s) Location: Quarona, Vercelli (Piedmont) Known for: The finest cashmere and vicuna in the world

Loro Piana is arguably the most prestigious name in luxury fibers. They control the entire supply chain — from sourcing raw cashmere in Mongolia and Inner Mongolia to spinning finished yarn in their Italian mills. Their cashmere is selected for fineness (averaging 14-15 microns) and length, producing yarn with extraordinary softness and minimal pilling.

What we stock: Pure cashmere, cashmere-silk blends, baby cashmere, and merino-cashmere blends. Loro Piana yarn from our warehouse typically costs 40-50% less than retail.

Best for: Luxury accessories, fine-gauge knitting, special occasion garments.

Zegna Baruffa / Lane Borgosesia

Founded: 1850 (Baruffa), merged with Zegna group Location: Borgosesia (Piedmont) Known for: Cashwool merino, fine merino wools

Zegna Baruffa (part of the Ermenegildo Zegna textile empire) produces some of the world's finest merino yarn. Their Cashwool line — a specially processed merino that rivals cashmere for softness — has become an industry standard. They also produce excellent merino blends with cashmere, silk, and other luxury fibers.

What we stock: Cashwool, pure merino, merino-cashmere blends, merino-silk blends in a wide range of Nm and colors.

Best for: Everyday luxury sweaters, commercially viable knitwear, any project where you want cashmere-like softness at a merino price point.

Cariaggi

Founded: 1958 Location: Cagli (Marche) Known for: Ultra-fine cashmere, Jaipur cashmere

Cariaggi is a specialist in cashmere and noble fibers. Their Jaipur line uses exceptionally fine cashmere (14-15 micron) processed with proprietary techniques to achieve remarkable softness. They also produce excellent cashmere-silk and cashmere-wool blends.

What we stock: Jaipur cashmere, standard cashmere, cashmere blends, and specialty fibers. Stock availability varies by season.

Best for: Ultra-luxury projects, fine-gauge cashmere accessories, high-end knitwear production.

Biagioli Modesto

Founded: 1950s Location: Cagli (Marche) Known for: Cashmere yarns for high fashion

Biagioli is a major cashmere spinner supplying many luxury fashion houses. They process cashmere from Inner Mongolia and produce yarns known for consistency and soft hand feel. Their production focuses on classic cashmere colors and standard counts used by the fashion industry.

What we stock: Pure cashmere in various Nm, cashmere blends, and specialty fibers.

Best for: Production knitwear, classic cashmere garments, reliable stock for regular production.

Lana Gatto

Founded: 1926 Location: Tollegno (Piedmont) Known for: Versatile range of yarns, excellent quality-to-price ratio

Lana Gatto produces a wide range of yarns — from pure cashmere to cotton blends — and is known for consistent quality across their entire line. They're popular with both hand knitters and manufacturers because they offer premium Italian quality at more accessible price points.

What we stock: Merino, cashmere blends, alpaca, mohair, cotton, and specialty blends. One of the broadest ranges in our warehouse.

Best for: Everyday knitting, commercial production, customers who want Italian quality without the premium price tag of top-tier brands.

Millefili

Location: Biella (Piedmont) Known for: Innovative blends, fashion-forward yarns

Millefili produces creative yarn blends that combine traditional Italian quality with fashion-forward thinking. Their range includes unusual fiber combinations and textured yarns that are popular with designers creating statement pieces.

What we stock: Blended yarns, fashion yarns, specialty textures. Stock varies with fashion seasons.

Best for: Fashion-forward projects, designer collections, unique textures and fiber combinations.

T&D (Todd & Duncan style)

Known for: Fine spinning, cashmere specialization

T&D produces high-quality cashmere and cashmere-blend yarns used by many European fashion brands. Their spinning produces consistent, well-balanced yarns suitable for both hand and machine knitting.

What we stock: Cashmere, cashmere blends, and fine merino yarns.

Best for: Production cashmere, machine knitting, consistent quality for repeat orders.

How We Source

We don't manufacture yarn — we source it. Our model is straightforward:

1. Italian mills produce more yarn than their contracted orders require 2. Fashion seasons end, leaving surplus stock of premium yarn 3. Colors are discontinued but yarn quality is identical to current production 4. We buy this surplus directly from the mills at stock prices 5. We pass the savings to our customers

The yarn you buy from us is the same yarn that goes into garments from the world's top fashion houses — just purchased through a different channel. Same mills, same fibers, same quality.

Finding Brand Yarns in Our Catalog

Our online catalog shows the brand (mill) for each product. You can search or filter by brand to find yarns from specific mills. The Nm, composition, color, and available quantity are listed on every product page.

Can't find a specific yarn? Contact our team. Our warehouse holds stock that may not yet be listed online, and we can check availability of specific brands, fibers, or colors.
